Both attacks were from ahead and pressed right home. When first sighted the enemy were, in both cases, in loose formation but formed in line ahead just before they turned to dive. They dived at an angle of 50°, well above the maximum elevation of the 4.7-inch guns, and followed each other in quick succession. After dropping their bombs they retired low over the sea.

Twenty-two of HMS Boreas’s crew were killed, the ship out of action until January 1941. HMS Brilliant was also damaged and put out of commission until September 1940, although there were no casualties.

Having already lost the popular Flight Lieutenant ‘Wonky’ Way earlier in the day, 54 Squadron, desperately fighting above the destroyers, would remember 25 July 1940 as ‘Black Thursday’:
